Challenges in pea breeding for tolerance to drought: status and prospects

نویسندگان

چکیده

Drought is increasingly frequent in the context of climate change and considered a major constraint for crop yield. Water scarcity can impair growth, disturb plant water relations, reduce use efficiency. Pea (Pisum sativum) temperate grain legume rich protein, fiber, micronutrients, bioactive compounds that benefit human health. In reducing pea yield due to drought, intensity duration stress are critical. This review describes several drought resistance mechanisms based on morphology, physiology, biochemical changes during/after deficit period. tolerance be managed by adopting strategies such as screening, breeding, marker-assisted selection. Therefore, various biotechnological approaches have led development drought-tolerant cultivars. Finally, main objective current research point out some useful traits peas also, mention methods future studies breeding programmes. article protected copyright. All rights reserved.

Genomic Tools in Pearl Millet Breeding for Drought Tolerance: Status and Prospects

Pearl millet [Penisetum glaucum (L) R. Br.] is a hardy cereal crop grown in the arid and semiarid tropics where other cereals are likely to fail to produce economic yields due to drought and heat stresses. Adaptive evolution, a form of natural selection shaped the crop to grow and yield satisfactorily with limited moisture supply or under periodic water deficits in the soil. Drought tolerance i...

Breeding for salt tolerance in cereal and legumes: Status and prospects

Introduction Soil salinity is an important limiting factor for crop yield improvement, which affects 5-10% of arable lands approximately 75-100 million ha worldwide, depending on estimates (Szabolcs, 1994; Munns, 2002). Most crops are sensitive to salt stress at all stages of plant development, from seed germination through vegetative and reproductive growth. Salt originates from marine geologi...

Genomics-assisted breeding for drought tolerance in chickpea

Terminal drought is one of the major constraints in chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.), causing more than 50% production losses. With the objective of accelerating genetic understanding and crop improvement through genomicsassisted breeding, a draft genome sequence has been assembled for the CDC Frontier variety. In this context, 544.73Mb of sequence data were assembled, capturing of 73.8% of the ge...

Breeding for Drought Tolerance in Cereals: an Overview

Drought is among the most serious abiotic stresses in many parts of the world where cereal crops are essential human food source. Breeding cereals for such stress tolerance is strongly challenging the breeders’ efforts where difficulties are compounded by the complexity of crop yield on the genetic and physiological bases. For cereal plants, drought tends to develop slowly under field condition...

Breeding Maize for Drought Tolerance in the US Corn-Belt

The objective of this review is to promote discussion on some of the key issues we consider to be involved in successful long-term genetic improvement of corn for drought tolerance. Many of the concepts have been discussed elsewhere for different crops, traits and different breeding targets. Here we focus on how to organize a comprehensive effort to enable breeding for drought tolerance in a he...
